Ra煤l Carrillo joined Boston College Law School as an Assistant Professor of Law in 2025. He writes about how law and technology constitute money, banking, and finance. His scholarship shows how monetary and financial systems, embedded in material infrastructure, also operate as systems of data, surveillance, knowledge, media, culture, and communications. Carrillo鈥檚 work reveals new forms of power that institutions generate by controlling these systems. Subjects include payment apps and devices, cryptocurrency and blockchain, 鈥渕oney鈥� in video games, satellite money transmission, and financial AI agents. He has published scholarship in the Columbia Law Review and the Yale Journal on Regulation, among other venues.
Before he arrived at 成人快手Law, Carrillo was an Academic Fellow, Lecturer in Law, and the 2024鈥�2025 Kellis E. Parker Teaching Fellow at Columbia Law School. Previously, he was an Associate Research Scholar at Yale Law School and a Resident Fellow at the Yale Information Society Project. While at Yale, he worked as Deputy Director of the Law and Political Economy (LPE) Project, an international network of scholars, practitioners, and students developing proposals to build a more just, equal, and sustainable future. Carrillo sits on the Board of Directors of the Association of Law and Political Economy (ALPE), a new membership organization promoting these goals, and chairs its Emerging Scholars Committee.
Before turning toward academia, Carrillo was Policy Counsel at Demand Progress and a Fellow at Americans for Financial Reform. Earlier, he worked as a Staff Attorney at New Economy Project, providing free legal services to low-income New Yorkers, and served as Special Counsel to the Director of Enforcement at the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Among other public interest commitments, he sits on the Advisory Board of the Progressive Talent Pipeline. He regularly counsels policymakers and has testified before the U.S. Congress on several occasions.
Carrillo earned a J.D. from Columbia Law School and was a Resident Scholar at Oxford University as part of the Columbia鈥揙xford Alliance in Law and Finance. He received an A.B. in Social Studies from Harvard College.
